The photographic book “Rare” functions as a space of intimacy and reflection, illuminating what remains unseen, inaccessible, or unknown about the “parallel lives of others” in contemporary society. Art, as a form of catharsis, explores identity and the notion of collective consciousness, while reconsidering the role of institutional care and social inclusion. Through its sequence of images, the work raises questions, provokes reflection, and invites the viewer to reconsider the perceptual frameworks through which they understand the world.

The book develops the work across two distinct sections. The division prompted by the use of an instant analog Polaroid camera for part of the project. The choice to work with Polaroid was not envisioned from the outset. As the project progressed, I redefined my visual strategies, recognizing the conceptual resonance between the singularity of an instant photograph and the rarity of a medical condition. These analog frames play a decisive role in the book, beyond introducing a distinct visual motif, they strengthen the conceptual dimension of the work. The “suspension between two worlds”, past and present, becomes a symbol of the enduring significance of visibility in the context of rare disease.
