The Photographic Exhibition “Phenomenon” by Ypatia Kornarou is inspired by the symbolic operation of the “Doomsday Clock”. The “Apocalypse Phenomenon” is decoded through a non-“real time” countdown of the clock hands concerning the extinction of humanity.
Time shortens as the clock hands approach midnight, the end of the world. Nuclear weapons, wars, climate change, pandemics, artificial intelligence and the evolution of technology in general are essentially the factors that have influenced in recent years the uncontrollable march of the 90 seconds left in 2024 on the “Doomsday Clock “.
Its manufacture dates back to during the Cold War in 1947 by scientists researching the design of the atomic bomb. Their theory was based on the dramatic consequences that the planet is suffering in modern history from human but catalytic interferences. When the clock hand reaches midnight then we will have returned to an uninhabited earth.
The photographic exhibition “Phenomenon” seeks to communicate a vital message about contemporary reality. The portraits in the project witness an unspoken fear of a global threat. The place of human dignity is destabilized. Existence becomes a negotiated condition of an imperialist monologue. The timer can even belatedly stop the countdown as well as return the vitality time consumed unnecessarily. But the question of the future of humanity will remain intact for many years to come, occupying the consciousness of human morality.
